Injury scare for Suns skipper; King, Flanders dominate

Friday Feb 17

An injury scare has gone through the Gold Coast camp as captain Touk Miller left Friday's intra-club match early with hamstring tightness.

Miller played the first quarter of the match but pulled up short and wasn't seen for the rest of the game.

The Suns as well as their skipper didn't look too worried about the injury, which appears to be more of a precaution, according to AFL.com.au.

In good news, key forward Ben King looks to be playing and training at full flight.

The top-10 pick was out for all of 2022 with an ACL injury but looks to have put that behind him, slotting two majors during the match.

Forward-mid Sam Flanders was also impressive, kicking three goals as he continues to make selection headaches for the coaching staff heading into round one.

Joel Jeffrey also hit the scoreboard in Friday, putting five through the big sticks.

Heppell stands down as Essendon captain

Friday Feb 17

Dyson Heppell has officially stood down as captain of Essendon after plenty of speculation he'd give up the role.

New coach Brad Scott was a supporter of Heppell continuing as leader of the club but have him the space to make the decision on his own.

However, the 30-year-old felt it was the right time to step aside and allow the next wave of players to take control of the club as the Bombers enter a new era.

“As a little tacker, playing AFL footy was a dream, let alone playing for the club I supported and then further to that, becoming the captain of that club,” Heppell said in a club statement.

“Over the past six years, I had enormous pride and respect for my role as captain. Leadership can be a tough caper at times, but it has given me so much joy and has played a big part in my growth as a person, player and teammate.

“I owe an enormous amount of gratitude and thanks to the various players and playing groups, coaches, staff and Board members for backing me in over the years as well as our loyal fans and members.”

Saints hit with another key forward injury

Friday Feb 17

St Kilda has been hit with yet another injury to its key forwards, with Tim Membrey having surgery on his knee.

Membrey suffered the minor injury at training last week and had surgery yesterday to correct the issue, ruling him out of the preseason practice matches.

The believe the 28-year-old is still in line to be available for round one and assistant coach Robert Harvey is confident of that fact.

“He had minor surgery on his knee yesterday. The reports are all good so we are expecting him to be all good for round one,” Harvey said.

“He’s had a full summer, he’s barely missed a session, so we’re really happy where he’s at. It’s a minor setback, so we’re totally expecting him to be right for round one.”

Rayner shock positional move gaining momentum

Friday Feb 17

Cam Rayner's shock positional move to the backline is gaining momentum with Brisbane coach Chris Fagan providing some insight.

Rayner has predominantly played as a forward-mid through his first five years with the thought that he'd turn into a midfielder as he gained more experience.

However, due to the inclusions of Josh Dunkley and Will Ashcroft in the offseason, the Lions have opted to trial new roles for the former number one pick, which includes off the half back.

"He's a great team man and at under-16s he was an All-Australian as a half-back flanker, so he's actually got experience playing down there," Fagan said, according to AFL.com.au.

"If you play down back, you learn a lot of things about being a forward. You learn as a backman what really challenges you, so it's a good lesson in reverse for Cam.

"He looks quite a natural down back at the moment.

"He's played all the practice matches there and we'll just weigh it up when we get to the season which way we go with him."

Essendon trio on track after injury scares

Essendon forward trifecta Sam Weideman, Jake Stringer and Peter Wright are all on track ahead of the 2023 despite some minor injury scares over the past few weeks.

The trio all featured during the club's match simulation on Thursday alongside smalls Alwyn Davey, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Jye Menzies.

Stringer was previously nursing a back complaint that reduced some of his workload in recent weeks while Wright (calf) and Weideman (quad) look to be in good health, according to the Herald Sun.

Sicily "fine" despite ankle scare

Thursday Feb 16

Hawthorn's James Sicily has been declared "fine" despite an ankle scare that saw him miss the second half of the intra-club match on Wednesday.

Assistant coach Adrian Hickmott said there's little concern that the favourite for the Hawks captaincy won't get himself right for the upcoming practice matches and round one.

He’ll be fine,” Hickmott told SEN.

“It was really, really minor.

“We had some players we had to manage too, we were really aware that it’s a long season.

“To manage players and take them out on minutes was to get them through the next few weeks really.

“We play Geelong down there and then Collingwood in Tassie (in practice games).”"

Key forwards long-shot for round one

Thursday Feb 16

Journalist Mitch Cleary believes that key forward pair Tom Hawkins and Tom Lynch are unlikely to feature in their round one clashes against Collingwood and Carlton.

Lynch has been on light drills at Punt Road since his foot surgery in November and hasn't joined in the main training for some time.

“I’ve still got my doubts (on Lynch’s availability),” Cleary told SEN.

“I haven’t seen him as part of match play just yet and we’re getting pretty close now.

“He’s been on the outer wing at Punt Road for most of the pre-season after surgery in November, it was to relieve some plantar fasciitis pain he had."

Hawkins on the other hand is also tending to an ankle problem that he's been battling since the final series last season.

“The other one at Geelong is Tom Hawkins, I think it’s a long shot now that he plays,” Cleary said.

“They say he has been running, I haven’t seen it with my own eyes.

“They don’t really let us into training, but he has been away from the main group for most of pre-season.

“So, I think it’s a long shot that Tom Hawkins will be there for Round 1 against Collingwood.”

Brayshaw, Serong not done yet

Thursday Feb 16

Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong have received glowing endorsements from their coach Justin Longmuir, who believes the pair haven't stopped improving.

Longmuir admitted that Serong has consistently taken steps forward in his own game that will benefit the side.

“Caleb is looking like he’s taken a step forward in his game and is becoming a real leader and key performer in there,” Longmuir said.

“His contest work and his execution has gone to another level and that’s off the back of the purpose he brings to everything he does.”

Whereas Brayshaw on the other hand is adding leadership qualities to his 2022 MVP trophy and fourth place finish in the Brownlow.

“He’s set such a high bar for himself,” Longmuir said.

“His fitness has gone to another level. He’s been working on his hands and his creativity in tight, he’s been able to buy himself a lot of time with the ball.

“I definitely see elements of his game going to another level as well.”

Sloane "ready to go" says former teammate

Thursday Feb 16

Former Adelaide skipper Rory Sloane is reportedly "ready to go" for the upcoming trial and practice matches as he recovers an ACL injury he suffered early in 2022.

Assistant coach Nathan van Berlo has been keeping an eye on his ex-teammate and is excited by his progress since last year.

“It’s really exciting for Rory, he has put in a mountain of work throughout his rehab,” van Berlo said according to the club's website.

“He’s done everything to the letter and he is ready to go, which is surprising to some, but for us internally seeing the way he has gone about it is a credit to the work he has put in.

“For him to be out there playing I know it just reinvigorates him and the boys love having him out there as well.”

Acres slotting in perfectly at the Blues

Thursday Feb 16

Blake Acres has slotted in seamlessly at Carlton, his third AFL club.

The winger left Fremantle during the recent trade period and has ironically reunited with a former coach of his, Aaron Hamill, who was at St Kilda (Acres' first team).

Hamill spoke on how Acres is driving the standards at training and what he'll add to the Blues in 2023.

“I was involved with Blake’s career at the Saints and he always had the attributes with his power and his running capacity when I was down there,” Hamill said, according to the club's website.

“He has matured as a person and as a footballer. He has fit in really well, there was never going to be an issue with that.

“It was a great effort from our recruiting crew to get him over the line.

“He’s driving the group in terms of preparation and system quite strongly.

“Watching him from afar at Fremantle and how he cemented his spot there on the wing, he gives you a point of difference around stoppages.

“He comes from a good system in Freo’s defence, and his nous around the ground has improved 10 fold since I first met Blake.”

Demons update

Thursday Feb 16

The Herald Sun has provided an in-depth update on Melbourne as the club ramps up its preseason preparations ahead of the 2023 season.

Brodie Grundy was a no-show at training on Wednesday as the Demons are managing his load but is expected to be good to go on Friday.

Ben Brown, Bayley Fritsch, Jake Melksham and Taj Woewodin are all on modified training programs and were seen scouting from the boundary.

Tom McDonald and youngster Jacob Van Rooyen - who's touted too debut in round one - have been gelling well together up forward throughout the summer and could be a combination coach Simon Goodwin goes with.

Melbourne signs Turner with last spot on list

Wednesday Feb 15

Melbourne have signed Kye Turner on the final day of the SSP with the last spot on their list.

Turner - who's been training with the Demons over the summer - beat out AFL-lifeline hopeful Trent Burgoyne for the last locker.

The 21-year-old has been overlooked on multiple drafts but now gets his chance to live out his lifelong dream.

Zorko stands down as captain, gives his tip for role

Wednesday Feb 15

Dayne Zorko has officially stood down as captain of Brisbane.

Since assuming the role in 2018 and 105 games in charge, Zorko has decided to move on from the role, saying how "privileged" he was to do so.

“It’s been a privilege and a pleasure to lead a Club with such incredible history and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be at its helm the past five years,” Zorko said in a club statement.

“Over my years as captain, I’m proud to have helped the Club be more respected again amongst the AFL world and to have helped lead the charge in the successes we’ve had on the field. I step down at a time when the Club is in really good hands and entering a new chapter."

Zorko, who spoke on SEN, announced that youngster and Victorian Hugh McCluggage as his successor.

McCluggage is only 24 years old and has established himself as an elite midfielder under coach Chris Fagan.

Zorko did say that Harris Andrews and Lachie Neale would also be strong candidates to replace him.

“More than likely (Andrews is the leading candidate). Harris has been the vice-captain for the last three years under myself. He’s a really well respected voice amongst the playing group and around the club, he does everything right, he’s a really vocal leader,” Zorko told SEN.

“The other candidates are someone like Lachie Neale and Hugh McCluggage.

“Hugh for me is the one that probably has the ability to do it, whether maybe he’s a little bit too raw at the moment or he wants to find his feet a little bit more, that’s a decision the club will have to make.

“For me, he would be the perfect fit.

“It’s a big process and I’m sure the club will make the best decision possible. Those are the three in my mind stick out as the clear candidates to take over the role.”

Suns trio pushing their case for round one; King on track

Wednesday Feb 15

Gold Coast trio Sam Flanders, Charlie Constable and draftee Bailey Humphrey are all putting their hand up for round one after impressing summers.

Flanders and Constable have generally found themselves on the outer under coach Stuart Dew but have rarely put a foot wrong in the offseason.

The former Cat has had a positional change from the midfield to the half back to give him more opportunity to play AFL football, which the club is excited about.

Humphrey has also impressed since joining the Suns in November as pick six and could be in line to debut mid-March.

But, what Gold Coast fans would most be excited about is Ben King's recovery as he is on track to feature in the upcoming practice matches.

Midfielder Matt Rowell spoke on King's comeback and how he'll slot right into the side.

“It’s been great to see him get out into training and into more drills,” Rowell said, according to the Herald Sun.

“I am just really excited to see him back out there.

“Since I have been on the Gold Coast I haven’t been able to play with him much because I was injured a bit and then he has got injured so I am really excited for him to get back.

“Coming out of stoppage and seeing him and kicking it to him will be pretty cool. I am good friends with him and he’s worked so hard since he’s done his knee. I am really looking forward to him getting back playing.”

Darling avoids surgery

Wednesday 15 Feb

West Coast forward Jack Darling has reportedly avoided surgery and still remains to play in round one despite.

Darling left the track last week after teammate Jeremy McGovern landed on his foot and got caught underneath him.

The Eagle looked to be sidelined for months given his initial reaction to his injury but coach Adam Simpson is remaining positive about Darling's availability.

“I don’t think it’s too severe. He’ll be touch-and-go for round one, but knowing the way he is I think he’ll be OK,” Simpson said, according to The Age.

“So no surgery, just an ankle. We’ll see how he recovers the next couple of weeks.

“Hopefully we’ve dodged a bullet.”

Richmond don't offer Narkle lifeline

Tuesday Feb 14

Richmond have decided not to offer Quinton Narkle a spot on their list as the preseason supplemental selection period is set to end tomorrow, February 15.

Narkle - who has been training with the Tigers over the summer - was reportedly told by the club that he won't get a contract for 2023, according to journalist Jordan McArdle.

The former Geelong midfielder was competing with Kaelan Bradtke and Luke Teal.

AFL.com.au reported that Bradtke was signed by the Tigers on Tuesday.

The key forward is the 14th player that has been snared during the SSP and will add depth to Richmond's list.

Eagles tall wheelchaired in scary training incident

Tuesday Feb 14

West Coast tall Jack Williams has reportedly put fear into the club after a sickening injury at training that has resulted in a suspected lung puncture.

Journalist Ryan Daniels broke the news, saying Williams had to be wheelchaired around.

The 19-year-old showed great signs during the summer months and the Eagles were excited by his progress.

However, this unfortunate setback will likely sideline Williams for at least a month but no timeline or estimation on his return has been given.

English sends injury scare through camp

Tuesday Feb 14

Western Bulldogs ruckman Tim English has sent an injury scare through the club, after limping off the track.

English - who suffered some hamstring tightness - will be sent for scans to determine the injury.

The Bulldogs will be taking it cautiously with their number one ruckman.

Lewis out for at least the first month

Tuesday Feb 14

Hawthorn forward Mitchell Lewis will miss the first month of the AFL season his coach Sam Mitchell confirmed after sustaining an ACL sprain last month.

Lewis - who had a breakout season in 2022 - remains unclear as too when his return date will be.

"He's up and down, I would say. He's running a bit already but then he's had a little bit of swelling in it so then he has to back off," Mitchell told AFL.com.au.

"If things go really well, I think potentially he'll be available for round four or five as an absolute best case scenario. There's nothing that will speed it up. And any setbacks that he has, which is likely, will knock him back a week or two weeks or a month or two months.

"At this stage he just goes day by day and tries to get as much improvement as he can and we're not going to rush him. He's an important player and if you get a knee wrong then it's 12 months out of the game so we'd like to avoid that."

Kelly of-old ready to turn leaf after disappointing 2022

Monday Feb 13

West Coast's Tim Kelly is training at his all-time best and is keen to put 2022 behind him.

Coming back in excellent condition, Kelly has taken his training levels to new heights, with the club internally seeing much improvement in his work.

Since crossing from Geelong as an All-Australian, the 28-year-old has failed to reach the stardom the Eagles expected of him when they gave away two first-round picks.

Building on last year's third-place finish in the best-and-fairest, Kelly is ready to go up a notch and he's bringing his teammates with him.

Young Bomber stung with injury

Monday Feb 13

Essendon midfielder Ben Hobbs is in a race against the clock for round one after sustaining a calf injury at training on Monday.

Set to miss the next few weeks, Hobbs is unlikely to play against Gold Coast in the practice game and depending on recovery, could be out even longer.

Bomber GM of performance Daniel McPherson gave some insight into the youngsters injury.

"Ben has completed a full pre-season up to this point, so we expect him to recover quickly," McPherson said, according to AFL.com.au.

"His calf has settled quickly and should only require a small de-load before he re-enters the program in the coming weeks."

Hobbs now joins Guelfi on the sidelines as the club ramps up its preparations for season 2023.

Crows name surprise Sloane successor

Monday Feb 13

Adelaide have named their new captain for 2023 and beyond, with Jordan Dawson taking over from Rory Sloane.

Dawson - who joined the Crows at the end of 2021 from Sydney - will become the club's ninth skipper and being added to the leadership group halfway through last season.

The 25-year-old came runner up in the best and fairest in 2022 and has been noted as a strong leader amongst his teammates, which is reflected by the fact he was appointed captain.

“I could not be more excited to captain the Club I barracked for growing up as a kid,” Dawson said in a club statement.

“It was surreal to pull on the guernsey last year, and now this is a huge honour.

“Everyone at this Club wants to win and have success and do it as quickly as we can, so I’m honoured to have the responsibility of driving that.

“It’s an incredible privilege and even better having the likes of Rory Sloane and Taylor Walker – both highly respected captains of the Club – and our leadership group here to help me on this journey.”

Out-of-favour Tiger injured at training

Monday Feb 13

Richmond forward Jason Castagna has hurt his hamstring at training over the weekend and is in some doubt for round one.

The club is yet to find out what the damage is, with scans on Monday to reveal the extent of the injury.

Castagna has struggled over the past couple seasons to cement his spot in the side.

Maurice Rioli and Noah Cumberland have come in as likely replacements in 2022 and the inclusion of GWS pair Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper could push Dustin Martin and Shai Bolton into more forward-dominant roles.

Castagna's position in the best 22 has become more difficult and the hamstring injury hasn't helped his cause.

Cameron, Daniher dominate match sim

Monday Feb 13

Brisbane pair Joe Daniher and Charlie Cameron have reportedly dominated match sim, slotting four goals each as the "A-side" romped their opponents.

The Lions underwent a gruelling intra-club over the weekend, where coach Chris Fagan was looking at what combinations would work best.

After the departure of Daniel McStay to Collingwood, the forward line does look a bit different, especially since Jack Gunston joined the club.

However, it was Daniher and Cameron who were at their best in what was a good showing leading into the practice games and round one.

Brisbane also noted that the midfield gang of Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley and Will Ashcroft continued their impressive work together while Zac Bailey also played well.

Scott confident "power athlete" Stringer will be good to go

Monday Feb 13

Essendon coach Brad Scott is excited by what Jake Stringer can bring to his side, admitting that he is not a "marathon runner" but his strength is something the club can work with.

Stringer copped criticism from SEN's Kane Cornes about consistently finding himself injured during preseasons after a minor setback recently.

“He's back to square one, overweight, injured and watching on,” Cornes said.

“Jake Stringer is destined to be another talented player than never reached their potential. He only has himself to blame."

However, Scott essentially came in to back up his player, saying that there is very few that can do the things Stringer can do.

“Jake, from my understanding anyway, played a fair bit of last year with a fair bit of groin soreness,” Scott said, according to SEN.

“When I look at Jake Stringer he is a strength (and) power athlete. When coaching against him previously, he’s always someone you’re worried about.

“I’ve always been concerned from an opposition perspective that it’s Jake’s power and impact in games that are his real weapons.

“Our focus with Jake has been, first and foremost, to get him injury free and to get him pain-free, that’s been our number one focus during the pre-season.”

Gardner gives glowing endorsement of teammate Darcy

Monday Feb 13

Western Bulldogs defender Ryan Gardner couldn't be more excited about Sam Darcy's potential.

Darcy - who is only 19-years-old - is already turning heads with his ability to intercept mark and read the play well above what his age suggests.

The son-of-a-gun has shown so much in his four AFL games in 2022 and is hoping to build on that this coming season.

“I think he’s going to be an absolute gun,” Gardner said on SEN.

“Even just what he does at the moment, if the ball gets kicked anywhere near him he just marks it.

“He’s got extremely good skills, he’s a great kick for a tall guy, and he’s only young.

“I can see him being an absolute star. Some of the things he does are incredible, especially only being in his second year.

“We’ve had a couple of match sims already where he played down back and the ball has been kicked near him and he just marked everything. He’s racking up five or six intercept marks in a match sim that only goes for 40 minutes.”

Blakey could miss preseason matches with illness

Monday Feb 13

Sydney defender Nick Blakey has come down with glandular fever and is likely to miss the preseason matches over the coming weeks.

Blakey has become a stalwart in the Swans back six, using his dare and elite ball skills to help drive the ball out of the defence.

However, his illness means the next few weeks of his preseason will be interrupted and Sydney head of physiotherapy Damian Raper said it'll be a few weeks before he joins the group again.

"Nick Blakey has been feeling unwell and results from tests have shown he has a mild case of glandular fever," Raper said, according to AFL.com.au.

"As a result, Nick will be rested for approximately three weeks before returning to training."

Long loving his time on the Gold Coast

Monday Feb 13

Former St Kilda player Ben Long said he is loving his time at new his new club, the Gold Coast, after being traded during the trade period last year.

Struggling to cement his spot in the side at the Saints, Long endeavoured to search for a fresh start in hope for more consistency on the field.

Since joining the Suns, the 25-year-old has slotted seamlessly into the backline, despite being played as a forward in 2022.

#Ben Long

"I definitely loved being at St Kilda and the opportunity they gave me," Long said, writes AFL.com.au.

"My position definitely fluctuated at the Saints, but I feel like I still had an impact there.

"Part of the (reason for the) move was just not being settled. I was thrown around a bit over my time there and it was more to see where I could play my best footy … and that's down in defence."

Long's position at the Suns looks pretty set given the long-term injuries to Will Powell (hamstring/ACL) and Connor Budarick (ACL), with the pair expected to miss at least the first two months of the 2023 season.

Saints fill last list spot with SSP

Monday Feb 13

St Kilda has used up its last list spot, signing youngster Anthony Caminti as a pre-season supplemental selection.

With the period set to end on Wednesday, February 15, the Saints thought it'd be wise to top up their tall stocks, given their injuries to Max King, Matthew Alison and Jack Hayes over the summer.

Caminti - who joined Carlton's VFL program during the offseason - comes in as a key forward, who reportedly dominated the Saints intra-club match, impressing new coach Ross Lyon and Stephen Silvagni.

Could Charlie be the no.1 player in 2023?

Friday Feb 10

Carlton's Charlie Curnow has followed up his impressive bounce-back season in 2022 with an outstanding preseason over the summer months.

Claiming the Coleman Medal with 64 goals, Curnow is looking to take his game to another level in 2023 and his preseason suggests he will.

The 26-year-old was seen tearing up a training session on Friday, according to the Herald Sun.

Curnow was dominant in practice, leaving all his injury woes in the past as he consistently flew for marks and impressed on the ground as a big man.

Working in tandem was 2021 Coleman Medallist, Harry McKay, who was just as commanding playing alongside Curnow.

McKay was rarely beaten in the air and continues to work on his finishing skills.

Carlton add ruckman through SSP

Friday Feb 10

Carlton have added young ruckman Hudson O'Keefe to their list after placing Sam Phil on the inactive list.

O'Keefe was overlooked in the 2022 Draft despite performing strongly for Victoria Metro and the Oakleigh Chargers.

The 18-year-old adds more depth to the tall stocks, joining experienced duo Marc Pittonet and Tom De Koning as the club's ruckman.

Blues list manager Nick Austin is excited by the prospect of O'Keefe and believes he can add something to the club.

“Hudson impressed us with his ability to not only win hit-outs, but also get the ball away effectively from stoppages through his physicality and competitiveness – all strengths we think will add to an exciting mix in our rucks,” Austin said, according to SEN.

“Hudson will work closely with our ruck coach Matthew Kreuzer as he gets to work, building and improving his ruck craft.

“We’re also keen to make him a more well-rounded player which will come over time, so we’ll invest in his development and we’re thrilled to have him as part of the Blues.”

Darling down as forward puts scare through Eagles camp

Friday Feb 10

West Coast veteran Jack Darling has been seen limping off the training track following an incident during match simulation.

Darling was injured during a tackle from Jeremy McGovern, when his ankle got caught under the defender and immediately began calling for the trainers.

The key forward was helped off the ground and is likely to miss the first few weeks of the season, according to AFL.com.au.

Collingwood lands speedster after another injury to Dean

Friday Feb 10

Collingwood have signed speedster Oleg Markov after officially putting Charlie Dean on the inactive list.

Markov was initially scouted by the Pies during the Summer but opted to sign a ruckman, Oscar Steene, with their last spot on the list.

However, a heartbreaking injury to Dean meant a spot was opened, to which Collingwood quickly snagged the former Sun.

Pies GM Graham Wright spoke on the signing of Markov.

“Oleg adds depth at a position of need – he has speed and running power – and he is a quality young man who impressed us during his time with us over the preseason,” Wright said.

“We look forward to welcoming Oleg back to our program in the coming days as we continue our preparations for the 2023 season.”

Carlton were reportedly after the running defender as Zac Williams went down with an ACL injury.

However, the Pies were quick to beat them before the SSP February 15 deadline.

Lions fixing "glaring" issue over preseason

Friday Feb 10

Brisbane have worked tirelessly over the summer months, fixing a "glaring" problem in their backline.

The Lions fell to Geelong in the preliminary final by 71 points and has realised its defence needs major updating.

Captain Dayne Zorko spoke on SEN about how the club is tracking and what they've been working on to improve in 2023.

“I think defensively last year we just leaked too many points, I think there were three or four games where we conceded over 100 points and in previous years we hadn’t done that,” Zorko said.

“Obviously we know we’ve got a lot of firepower in our forward line, we know we can kick a score but defensively we’ve just been really poor the last 12 months and that’s an area of focus we’ve really honed in on in the pre-season.

“The rest of our game certainly needs some finetuning, but I think the glaring one for us was defence.”

Unlucky Dean can't catch a break

Friday Feb 10

Collingwood defender Charlie Dean can't seem to catch a break, re-fracturing his right foot at training.

Dean - who was in line to debut at the beginning of 2022 before injury struck - was tracking well and would've put his hand up for the opening rounds of 2023.

However, an unfortunate mishap at training has ruled out the 21-year-old as the Pies have placed him on the inactive list.

Collingwood GM Graham Wright spoke about the disappointment and sadness the club feels for Dean.

“We are disappointed for Charlie who has had unfortunate luck with his foot over the past year,” Wright said.

“While Charlie is an extremely resilient footballer, we empathise with him after being so dedicated during a lengthy rehab last season and over the summer break.

“Our program will wrap our arms around Charlie and ensure he is well supported as he recovers.”

The Pies now have a vacant spot on their list to use before the SSP deadline February 15.

Sam Taylor gives glowing praise of GWS duo

Thursday Feb 9

GWS defender Sam Taylor has given glowing praise about fellow teammates Finn Callaghan and Tom Greene, as the pair have reportedly been dominating the preseason.

Taylor - who was awarded with a maiden All-Australian jacket and club best-and-fairest last year - spoke highly of the pair on SEN.

“Obviously, we’ve got a new strategy and game plan going forward,” Taylor said.

“Realistically it could be a tough first 10 weeks, but by the last 10 weeks we could be winning every game.

“Like I said before, players like Tom Green, he could be a Brownlow medallist in a few years.

“Finn Callaghan, who is probably one of the Rising Stars, he is a special player.

“I haven’t seen two people dominate a pre-season like those two, I don’t want to hype them up too much, but they could be an Oliver and Petracca like duo.”

Bennell is giving "one more crack" at the AFL

Thursday Feb 9

Former Gold Coast, Fremantle and Melbourne player Harley Bennell declared that he is giving the AFL "one more crack" at relaunching his career.

Bennell - who played 88 games across three clubs since 2011 - is keen to try his luck at a fourth club and will use VFL's Port Melbourne to do so.

The 30-year-old signed at the 'Borough' recently and is hoping he can be called on for an AFL lifeline.

"I'm heading off to Melbourne ... to give it one more crack," Bennell told The West Australian.

"I think coming up here (Tiwi Islands) was the best thing for me, I've only been up here for five months but it's been a life-changing experience."

Bennell was a part of the Suns' inaugural team back when they first began and lit up the football field with his silky skills and finishing in front of goal.

However, injuries plagued his pursuit for stardom and personal issues resulted in a difficult few years post the Gold Coast.

Moving to the Dockers, Bennell played two games in four seasons and then joined the Demons in a last-ditch attempt.

Unfortunately, that didn't work out too great either, featuring in five games during the COVID-19 ravaged season.

Impressively, Bennell has declared that he's put that all past him and isn't giving up his dream of playing AFL football.

"I'm really excited to get down to Melbourne to meet my new teammates and coaching staff for 2023," he said on Thursday.

"I'm just happy to be playing footy at a high level again and whatever happens on the way is a bonus, so I'm going to enjoy this one."

Fortunately for Bennell, there are more avenues to an AFL club as there was in the past.

For starters, the mid-season draft, which gives overlooked players a chance as living out their dreams.

Also, the pre-season supplemental selection period, which gives sides the ability to beef up their lists in case of long-term injuries to current players on their list.

Hawks draftees eyeing off round one debut

Thursday Feb 9

Hawthorn pair Cam Mackenzie and Josh Weddle have put their best foot forward as they look to debut in the AFL come round one.

Both impressing on the track since joining the club, AFL.com.au believe they're on track to feature in Sam Mitchell's best 22 after a host of experienced players departed the club last year.

Mackenzie - who was drafted as a midfielder - can slot into a vacant centre group that lost Tom Mitchell (Collingwood) and Jaeger O'Meara (Fremantle) to rival clubs.

The pick seven could join the likes of Jai Newcombe, Conor Nash, James Worpel and Connor Macdonald through the guts.

Weddle was selected as a key defender and could help bolster the talls in the backline, allowing James Sicily and Sam Frost to play more aggressive roles.

The Hawks made it clear that they're starting from the ground up, developing a litter of young talent all at once and hope they peak at similar times.

Over 1000 games of experience walked out the door last year, with Mitchell and the rest of his coaching staff instilling plenty of faith in the current group to carry forward for years to come.

Blues won't rush Walsh

Thursday Feb 9

Carlton won't be rushing gun Sam Walsh back too soon with an estimated return date still hidden in the clouds.

Walsh - who has been dealing with a lingering back issue that kept him from the round 23 clash with Collingwood last year - underwent back surgery in December in the hope he'll be ready for round one.

The 22-year-old broke silence on his progression and his frustrating injury.

“I feel like I’m really tracking in the right direction,” Walsh said, according to the Herald Sun.

“There’s obviously a fair bit still to go but it’s just great to be back out there among the group at times and feeling like I’m getting something out of my days, which has been great.

“Probably the main positive that I can grab out of this is I can work on a lot of other parts of my body and certainly learn a fair bit about myself.

“I’m really confident with the direction that it’s heading and I’ve just got to keep doing the right things and I’m sure that’ll land me in a good spot.”

Zorko experiences hiccup amid best pre-season

Thursday Feb 9

Brisbane skipper Dayne Zorko has recently suffered a hiccup in what has been arguably his best pre-season.

Zorko sustained a hamstring injury at training and is expected to miss the club's next two intraclub hit-outs.

Football manager Danny Daly believes the injury isn't serious, according to AFL.com.au, but will need the proper attention to ensure the 34-year-old is right to go come round one.

"He's done everything over the pre-season and is in great shape," Daly said.

"It's a small one (injury), but he'll be fine."

Zorko's teammates Jarrod Berry, Darcy Gardiner and Noah Answerth all had post-season shoulder surgery and are yet to be back at full training.

Daly is hopeful that Berry will get up for one of the Lions' match simulations but believes Gardiner and Answerth are more likely for the practice game against Geelong in March.

Hunt reveals Eagles who are flying

Thursday Feb 9

New West Coast recruit Jayden Hunt has provided some insight into who is tearing up the track as round one inches closers and closer.

Hunt - who joined the Eagles during the 2022 trade period - noted a few experienced players have been pushing themselves to the limit, to improve on last year's disappointing 17th placed finish.

“A few of the guys coming back have really surprised me – Elliot Yeo, some of the stuff he does around the track is quite amazing,” Hunt told SEN.

“Tim Kelly as well. It’s like, you know these guys are good players, but there’s sort of that divide in the media between WA and the Vic teams so you don’t really hear much about them.

“Those two and Jeremy McGovern have really impressed me."

Hunt also acknowledged pick one from the 2022 mid-season draft, Jai Culley, as a standout performer during the summer months.

“I’ve been really impressed. I didn’t really know much about him (Culley) and it sort of took me a few weeks to realise that he’s only been at the club for half a year,” he said.

“He’s just one of those eager kids that’s just trying to make a name for himself and really earn the trust of his teammates.

“Everything he’s doing at the moment, he’s pretty fanatical and he’s got his eyes set on Round 1 and not letting anything get in his way and it’s really impressive.”

SSP deadline looms as Feb 15 approaches

Wednesday Feb 8

The pre-season supplemental selection period is almost over, with the February 15 deadline inching closer.

Richmond, Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Melbourne and St Kilda are the remaining clubs with one list spot left.

The Tigers have former Geelong player Quinton Narkle vying for a spot at their club while the Blues are looking at running defender Oleg Markov to replace the injured Zac Williams.

East Fremantle's Jack Cleaver is the last man standing at the Bombers in hope for a spot on an AFL list as ex-Collingwood midfielder Callum Brown is training with the Hawks.

Trent Burgoyne (former Port Adelaide player) and Kye Turner (Frankston VFL player) are pushing their case for the last spot on the Demons list.

The Saints have asked down Carlton VFL forward Anthony Caminiti to train after a host of injuries to some big men.

The Dockers also have two players vying for a position on their list, with brother of Caleb Serong, Liam, and Sam Stubbs hoping for a chance, according to CodeSports.

Sloane trials new role

Wednesday Feb 8

Adelaide captain Rory Sloane was seen across the half back during the club's training on Wednesday.

Sloane - who is recovering from an ACL injury he sustained in round five last year - has predominantly played as a midfielder but has been open to a move due to the young talent coming through.

The Herald Sun spoke to Crows coach Matthew Nicks, who admitted that they're looking at a variety of roles for the 32-year-old.

Dees set to unleash Pickett on midfield

Wednesday Feb 8

Melbourne are set to unleash Kysaiah Pickett onto the midfield in 2023, adding another look to 2021 premiers.

Pickett has spent majority of his time up forward and proving to be a menace by hitting the scoreboard and pressuring opposition players.

Set to come out of contract at season's end, the 21-year-old's season will determine how many clubs vie for his signature and adding some midfield prowess should only boost his value.

The Demons are excited by the prospect of having Pickett around the stoppages, adding more dare and pace to the group.

AFL.com.au reported that the youngster has been impressive with his new positional switch.

Pickett has clearly put in the work in the offseason, adding some noticeable size whilst also improving his aerobic fitness and speed work which can prove to be a nightmare for other clubs.

Hawkins eyes off Pies despite injury concerns

Wednesday Feb 8

Geelong champion Tom Hawkins is confident that he'll be available come the round one clash against Collingwood despite recovering from foot surgery.

Hawkins has been battling with a lingering foot injury for quite some time, including during the finals series and underwent surgery to correct the issue.

With an interrupted pre-season, the likelihood of the veteran playing round one was low but he has the utmost belief that he'll put his hand up.

"In my mind, I'm aiming to play round one. Whether or not that happens, I'm not sure," Hawkins said.

"I think the most important thing is I, and we at the football club, want to make sure we are doing the right thing for my longevity so I'm not going to rush back and play when I'm not ready.

"I think realistically, chance to play round one, but again, it's really hard to put a timeline because as my load increases I'll get more of an indication of whether that's a possibility."

Injury scare for new Roo captain

Wednesday Feb 8

New North Melbourne co-captain Jy Simpkin has sent a scare through the club after suffering from tightness in his hamstring.

Simpkin limped off during match simulation but returned to complete a set of run-throughs along the boundary line.

Former skipper Jack Ziebell said post-training that he doesn't think it's much to worry about but more precautionary.

"I don't think (there are any concerns)," Ziebell said, according to AFL.com.au.

"I had a bit of a chat with him at half-time and he said he was a little bit tight in his hamstring. It's actually been a really big block for us in the last two weeks and today was the last really big main session that we've got, so there was a no-risk policy."

McStay excited by fellow Magpie recruits

Wednesday Feb 8

Collingwood recruit Dan McStay has fitted in seamlessly at his new club and is excited to play in front of the massive Magpie army.

McStay crossed to the Pies as a free agent from Brisbane and has noticed how committed his new teammates are during the preseason.

“Brisbane train has hard as anyone I’ve ever seen … there’s lots of similarities between the training and how hard the boys work, I think it’s just the market … to come to a team like that with the Magpie Army, it’s been amazing," McStay said, according to the Herald Sun.

“Big Mase (Cox) is a real pillar up there, Brody Mihocek has done a phenomenal job over the last few years really holding that post down.

“I think we’ve got a lot of flexibility, Darcy Cameron is a great ruck but can also get forward and kick goals. I don’t think it’ll just be me up there, I think we’ve got a lot of support.

“It’s so good to have guys like Jack Ginnivan and Bobby Hill at your feet as well.”

Fellow newbie Billy Frampton has also caught the eye of McStay during the summer months at the AIA Centre.

“At the moment Billy has probably been one of the standouts in pre-season playing that key position down back,” McStay said.

“He marks the ball incredibly well, uses the ball incredibly well, so he’s definitely been one that’s been a standout.

“He’s moved around a lot but I feel like coming to Collingwood he’s really cemented his place, he feels like this is home and I can’t wait to play alongside him for hopefully plenty of games to come.”

Himmelberg set for new role under new coach

Wednesday Feb 8

GWS star Harry Himmelberg is set for a new role under coach Adam Kingsley in 2023.

Himmelberg has predominantly played up forward until caretaker Mark McVeigh trialled him down back, resulting in one of the positives of the Giants season last year.

However, Kingsley - who took over as senior coach at the end of 2022 - is keen to keep the 26-year-old in his preferred position, up forward.

Harry Himmelberg

Himmelberg spoke to AFL.com.au about his position going forward for the upcoming season.

"He (Kingsley) thought, with the way we're going to play and with the way the gameplan was going to eventuate, that my attributes would suit us as a forward. At the moment, it's going really well," Himmelberg said.

"Obviously, there is scope to chop and change. But that's handy to have as well. If the structures aren't right or depending on personnel and injuries, I can always go down back. That's handy for the team and for myself.

"I'm probably more of a natural forward.

"I feel like the backline is easier when you've played forward, because you know exactly what the forwards want to do in terms of their spacing and all of this stuff and where people want to get the footy.

Turn away Pies fans, Henry is a "standout" at Cattery training

Tuesday Feb 7

Collingwood fans won't be happy when they hear that new Geelong recruit Ollie Henry is lighting up the track.

Well-known commentator Dwayne Russell went down to the Cattery's pre-season session and noticed how good Henry is moving at his new club.

Speaking on SENRussell said that the former Pie was the "standout" of the training but there was plenty to be excited about all over the track.

“I can tell you last night (last Thursday), it was ridiculous, they were efficient," Russell said.

“It was a very professional session, they really used their time well.

“Ollie Henry was the standout.

“Jhye Clark looked good, the kid they picked up in the draft and I thought Ollie Dempsey looked well for a lot of it.

“They tried Max Holmes in the middle for a lot of centre bounces and they rotated a few guys through there – when Jhye Clark was in there he just kept getting it."

Culley continues "exceptional" standard at Eagles

Tuesday Feb 7

Mid-season recruit Jai Culley has received a glowing endorsement from coach Adam Simpson on Tuesday.

Simpson - who's been in charge of West Coast since 2014 - was impressed by Culley's work of late and how much he's improved in just over six months at an AFL club.

“He’s been exceptional,” Simpson said on SEN.

“I think what’s happened over this pre-season is we’ve gone from probably four to six guys who are complete, ultimate professionals, almost too committed to the point where you’ve got to pull them back, to 15 or 16.

“Everyone is committed but there’s another level that you go to that sets the standard. This kid’s definitely done it.

“He ran a 6.30-35 2km when he first came over and he ran a 6-minute flat, or 6.03, this pre-season."

Culley was overlooked in the 2021 National Draft but made no mistake in ensuring recruiters saw him in the early stages of 2022.

The Eagles selected him with pick one of the mid-season draft.

Culley has played four games so far and will be looking to add to that in 2023.

Will Cotchin work up forward?

Tuesday Feb 7

Richmond have reportedly been trialing gun midfielder Trent Cotchin up forward as they make room for GWS recruits Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper.

Cotchin - who has predominantly played through the centre throughout his decorated career - is looking to add more strings to his bow but a lot of sceptics believe it won't work.

SEN personality Kane Cornes gives the former captain "two weeks" in his potential new role.

“If he’s not in the centre bounce, in the phone box where he does his best work – when he’s diving on boots, when he’s tackling, winning clearance, pushing the ball forward – I don’t think, if he’s not playing that role, he’s in Richmond’s best 22," Cornes said.

“He’s kicked 16 goals in the last five seasons, Trent Cotchin. I give it two weeks. I give the experiment two weeks."

AFL journalist Damien Barrett also gave his two cents on the AFL Daily Podcast on Tuesday essentially backing Cornes' view.

It will be an interesting look at how the Tigers will play Taranto, Hopper as well as Dustin Martin, Shai Bolton, Dion Prestia and Jack Graham in 2023.

Brodie gives nod to Dockers duo

Tuesday Feb 7

Fremantle midfielder Will Brodie is excited what new recruits Jaeger O'Meara and Josh Corbett can produce in 2023 after strong signs in the offseason.

Brodie - who had a terrific first year at the Dockers in 2022 - was bullish that the new pair can play important roles come round one.

“He’s (O'Meara) looking good,” Brodie said on SEN.

“He’s come in very well, he works really hard and he’s someone who is good for the group.

“He’s starting to really adapt, know the game plan, know the boys and starting to show what he can do.

“He’s been big for us and I’m sure will play an important role for us.”

With O'Meara almost certain to play in the best 23 under Justin Longmuir, the jury has still been out on Corbett across his career.

Playing 36 games across four seasons at Gold Coast, the key forward has struggled to cement his spot in the senior side, but Brodie thinks he can be huge after the departure of Rory Lobb.

“He can definitely play,” Brodie said.

“He has an incredible work-rate, he has great hands and he is a difficult one to match-up on as a defender.

“He just gives us another option up there in the forward line, he’ll definitely put his hand up, he’s been working really hard and connecting really well with the boys.

“I’m excited to see what he can do this year.”

Matt Crouch "smashing it at the moment"

Tuesday Feb 7

Out-of-favour Adelaide midfielder Matt Crouch is reportedly "smashing it" during the preseason.

Crouch - who managed 11 games in 2022 - found himself on the outer under coach Matthew Nicks, despite his incredible SANFL form and ability to find the footy at senior level.

Nicks acknowledged throughout the year there was things the 27-year-old needed to work on and is excited by what he can produce in 2023.

“Matty is smashing it at the moment, all those mids we have a lot of guys who are going through that midfield and we are doing a lot of experimenting,” Nicks said, according to the Herald Sun.

“And Matty is training extremely well at this point, he’s got areas of his game that we were working on last year that were tough for Matt.

“We are still working on them and he has demonstrated some real growth in those areas, mostly that was around the ability to really get going on offence.

“So it is a credit to Matt that he has been able to really put his head down and get the work in.

“But there is quite a battle in that midfield and it is exciting to watch. There are a lot of guys who are keen to get their hands in there and get them dirty and do the work around stoppage.

“Matty is one of them for us.”

Good news for Dogs fans as Treloar, English step in right direction

Tuesday Feb 7

Western Bulldogs midfielder Adam Treloar has taken a step closer to being available for round one selection despite his ongoing ankle issues.

Treloar was almost ruled out of the season opener, but a solid training session on Tuesday at Whitten Oval has provided some hope that he will be ready in six weeks time.

The former Pie has ankle surgery in September to hope correct lingering foot issues and has taken a bit longer than anticipated to return to full strength.

The Herald Sun revealed that Treloar took part in "match drills before completing running on the boundary line with other recovering players."

Tim English is also up and running following a recent adductor scare while Caleb Daniels is closing in on full fitness too.

Tim English

Bailey Smith also appears to be firing on all cylinders after recently overcoming some leg soreness that has hindered his 2023 preseason preparations.

Cox trialed in the backline under new coach Scott

Tuesday Feb 7

Essendon's desire to revamp the club under new coach Brad Scott continues to rear its head, with 200cm utility Nik Cox being trialed in the backline.

Scott has made it known that changes will be made at the struggling club and that he's got no fear in swinging the magnets around, despite some initial resistance by players and fans.

Cox - who has predominantly played on the wing and up forward - has been deployed in the defensive half, with his height an advantage and potential intercepting weapon.

Journalist Jay Clark revealed that the youngster could develop more bows to his game and could create more rebounding attacks for the Bombers in 2023.

Nik Cox Essendon

Cox's positional shift goes with Archie Perkins new role in the midfield.

Perkins has spent most of his career across half forward but now is to believed to be ready for a more significant role at Essendon.

Jackson firing on all cylinders

Tuesday Feb 7

Fremantle recruit Luke Jackson is reportedly flying at preseason training and his new club are very excited by what he can produce in 2023.

Jackson left Melbourne over the 2022 offseason for two first round selections and the Dockers worth he is every penny.

Journalist Ryan Daniels believes that the 2021 Rising Star winner is training well can help Fremantle reach the next stages after a semi final departure last year.

“This kid (Jackson) is playing like a cannonball, you watch him at training and he’s roving half the time,” Daniels said, according to SEN.

“If there’s a stoppage on the wing or at half-back or half-forward he’s around the ball with Darcy as well… what we will see if two of them running around that midfield and just throwing that weight around.

“Jackson moves like a midfielder. My expectation for him in the next couple of years is still as big as it ever was. I think he could be one of the best players in the AFL within 2-3 years, I really do.”

Former top 10 pick looks like Rioli replacement for Eagles

Tuesday Feb 7

Sam Petrevski-Seton is looking the most likely to replace the dangerous forward Junior Rioli, who was traded to Port Adelaide during the offseason.

AFL.com.au reported that the 24-year-old has been trialled up forward to fill the void left by Rioli, with his skill and intensity deployed in the front half.

The article pointed out that Petrevski-Seton stood out at Monday's training sessions and could be an answer up forward for the Eagles.

Petrevski-Seton - who was formerly a Carlton player - has struggled to cement his spot in West Coast's side since joining the club at the beginning of 2022.

At the Blues, the former pick six played across half back, through the midfield and in the forward line but found it difficult to gain any consistency.

Even at the Eagles, Petrevski-Seton has found it tough, playing only 14 games at in his home state.

Lynch almost ready to launch into 2023

Monday Feb 6

Richmond's Tom Lynch is nearing full fitness as he continues to overcome foot surgery in December.

The reigning Jack Dyer Medalist has been training away from the main group but has been on a strict running program that should hold him in good stead for round one.

The Tigers were conservative with their approach for Lynch and will be looking to have him join on the main sessions over the next fortnight.

Dion Prestia and Dylan Grimes were also confined to the rehab group along with the former Sun.

Prestia and Grimes both battled hamstring issues in 2022 and are keen on getting their bodies right for the upcoming season.

In more good news, defender Nick Vlastuin has returned to the main group after recovering from cracked ribs, says AFL.com.au.

Henry could face old side in round one

Monday Feb 6

Geelong forward Ollie Henry could be in line to face his former side Collingwood in round one with a host of Cats players in doubt for the season opener.

Tom Hawkins has been battling a foot injury that he dealt with during the finals run last year and had corrective surgery to hold him in good stead.

Shannon Neale has also been noted to be in the rehab group recovering from an ankle injury while Jeremy Cameron could miss due to the birth of his child.

Henry - who impressed in the black and white in 2022 - made the trip down the highway and joined his older brother, Jack and all reports are suggesting he's fit in well.

Salem on modified training program due to thyroid issue

Monday Feb 6

Christian Salem is reportedly on light duties due to a thyroid issue.

The Melbourne defender has dealt with problems with his thyroid glands (helps control body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure and weight) since he was drafted in late 2013.

Salem has now been put on a modified training program to ensure his health comes first and no timeline has been provided for his return to the main group, reported by AFL.com.au.

Demons's head of medical Dr Laura Lallanec provided some insight into the All-Australian's process.

"Christian is currently undergoing treatment for an illness resulted to his thyroid gland,"  Lallanec said.

"Christian has had a similar issue in the past where his thyroid becomes overactive.

"He will continue to be monitored closely by his specialist and reintegrate into training as his thyroid levels stabilise."

Pies, Blues vacant list spots look all but sewn up

Monday Feb 6

Collingwood and Carlton are reportedly about to sign new players via the pre-season supplemental selection period and finalise their lists.

The Pies recently signed West Adelaide ruckman Oscar Steene, who's been training with the club over the summer while the Blues look like locking away running defender Oleg Markov.

In regards to Steene, The Age's Pete Ryan believes that the Pies are set to make an official decision sometime this week.

Only 19-years-old, the South Australian has impressed Collingwood and could help add some more ruck depth to the club, especially since the departure of Brodie Grundy.

Pies GM Graham Wright said that Steene has fitted effortlessly into the system and confirmed his signing.

“Oscar filled a position of need and has fitted into our environment seamlessly,” Wright said.

“He has shown a good ability to learn and improve his craft, and his self-development is getting better day-by-day.

“We believe Oscar could play a key role in our AFL program this year and into the future.”

Markov's potential selection is to fill the void left by Zac Williams, who suffered an ACL tear on Saturday at training.

The former Sun and Tiger was training at the AIA centre but apparently is being looked at by Carlton.

The supplemental selection period (SSP) closes on February 15.

Lions trio gelling up forward

Monday Feb 6

A key takeaway from Brisbane's intra-club match was the fact that new recruit Jack Gunston was gelling well with Joe Daniher and Eric Hipwood.

Gunston - who crossed from Hawthorn during the 2022 trade period - is keen to add more silverware to his cabinet but will also play a vital role up forward, especially since Dan McStay departed.

Coach Chris Fagan spoke on how the veteran played with the Daniher and Hipwood.

"It was great to see Jack, Joe and Eric play together," Fagan said.

"Early days, Jack got free and we weren't looking for him because we weren't used to playing with him but we had a chat about that and reminded the boys outside 50 of how good Jack is at leading at the last moment and getting some space and as a result we found him a few times."

Perkins set on more midfield time

Monday Feb 6

Essendon are set to unveil Archie Perkins in the midfield in 2023.

The Bombers have been trialing the pick nine from the 2020 Draft through the centre, with reports suggesting he'll be spending more minutes in there.

Perkins has predominantly played half forward and wing, whilst chopping out when needed but that all looks set to change.

“I have been training pretty much fully with the midfield, last year I probably split it,” Perkins said.

“I have done a lot of work with Daniel Giansiracusa and Ben Jacobs around stoppages and the midfield side of the game. I’m really looking to improve on winning more of the ball, clearances and centre bounces.

“Starting as a forward was great for my career though as I learnt a lot of the forward patterns and that side of the game.

“I still want to be dynamic and be able to hit the scoreboard up forward.”

Crows set for 'worst week of our lives'

Monday Feb 6

Adelaide forward Riley Thilthorpe provided some insight into the club's preseason plans, stating that performance coach Darren Burgess is pushing them to the limit.

Missing the finals since 2017, the Crows are keen to make a push and surprising push for the eight and believe that getting their fitness woes in order will be a massive difference.

“We’ve been told by Burgo (High Performance Manager Darren Burgess) that the next couple of weeks are going to be really tough and probably the worst weeks of our lives,” Thilthorpe said.

“The biggest thing (has been) getting my body right.

“I had a few niggles out throughout my first couple of years, so just trying to get that right.

“I want to get a bit stronger -  we just want to get better from last year and all improve and build towards playing finals.”

Williams' woes continue

Saturday Feb 4

Leading AFL journalist Mitch Cleary has tweeted that Carlton defender Zac Williams has "suffered a suspected ACL" injury at training.

Williams has struggled to get on the park over the past few years, with injury and form crippling his consistency at the Blues and GWS.

Since joining IKON Park at the end of 2020, the former Giant has played 23 games in the in the navy blue and has struggled to showcase his true talent.

Williams was arguably one the GWS' best players in their 2019 grand final run and was worthy of a big contract which helped Carlton secure him.

However, he has not been able to live up to the dollar amount and the length of deal.

This new setback does put a dampen in Michael Voss' plans and can potentially highlight their depth issue, which was the main reason for 2022's pitfalls.

Head of Football Brad Lloyd spoke on the unfortunate injury.

“These incidents are so unfortunate and we are all feeling for Zac, he could not have done any more this pre-season to get himself ready for the year,” Lloyd said.

“He will undergo surgery to repair his ACL and from there, we will put a rehabilitation program in place for him over the next 12 months.

“He has had more than his fair share of bad luck with injury Zac but in that time he has built up a lot of resilience, which he will no doubt tap into, as we all support him on his road to recovery from here.”

Good news for Cameron

Saturday Feb 4

Collingwood and their fans breathe a sigh of relief as scans reveal only a minor tear in ruckman Darcy Cameron's hamstring.

Cameron limped off the training track on Wednesday to the medicos with a hamstring complaint.

The 27-year-old has been cleared of any serious damage and will likely resume training next week on a cautious level, reports AFL.com.au.

The Pies don't want to risk Cameron given the fact their ruck stocks are quite low, especially after the departure of Brodie Grundy.

Mason Cox and Aiden Begg did feature throughout 2022, with the former taking a more ruck-focused role.

Ashcroft living up to the hype

Saturday Feb 4

Father-son selection and gun Will Ashcroft is certainly living up to the hype as he is set to embark on his first AFL season.

Brisbane played match simulation at Friday's training, where AFL.com.au reported that Ashcroft was dominant amongst his teammates.

With a few bigger names resting on the sidelines, the highly talented youngster was a mainstay in the Lions midfield and showcased what he can do when given the opportunity.

The number two pick from the 2022 draft was excellent in his decision making and ball use.

Coach Chris Fagan was impressed by how Ashcroft played alongside Josh Dunkley and Lachie Neale in the club's intra match.

"The starting midfield group of Neale, Dunkley and Ashcroft were pretty impressive I thought," Fagan said.

"I was pretty happy with how they all worked with our ruckmen and that was the first time we've seen that because Lachie was out last week.

"It looked promising."

Naitanui dominates, key Eagles tracking well

Saturday Feb 4

West Coast's 2023 revenge season is well and truly underway, with All-Australian ruckman Nic Naitanui looking like his former self.

Riddled with injuries over the past few years, the man known as 'Nic-Nat' has been taking massive strides during the pre-season.

CODESports reported that the veteran was moving very well.

Naitanui "was pitted against both Bailey Williams and Callum Jamieson in the ruck and dominated both, getting forward to take a couple of good marks in attack which led to a goal. The most impressive thing from a West Coast perspective was that he rucked for almost the entire 60 minutes and looked lighter and fitter than at any stage in 2022," CODE said.

Elliot Yeo and Oscar Allen are also on the mend, getting through training unscathed and are starting to ramp up their 2023 preparations.

Tim Kelly is another name that keeps impressing and improving during the summer months, with the midfielder seen to be lighter and fitter than last season.

Hawkins on the mend, but the same can't be said for other Cats

Saturday Feb 4

Premiership hero Tom Hawkins is looking more and more likely to be available for round one after overcoming foot surgery during the Summer.

Hawkins - who battled through injury during Geelong's finals run - is on the mend and will tread cautiously until the lead up to the opening match against Collingwood

Cats GM of football Sim Lloyd is happy where the veteran is at with his recovery.

"Our numbers are good out on the track and we're happy with that, but obviously it's been well documented that Tom Hawkins had foot surgery, but it's really positive," Lloyd said.

"Tom's now running and running well and the big fella is in a really positive frame of mind.

"He's just so important to our group, so his loads will progress over the coming weeks."

However, in bad news for Geelong fans, ruckmen Toby Conway and Shannon Neale are sitting on the sidelines after the pair suffered foot injuries recently.

Setback for speedy Bomber

Saturday Feb 4

Essendon forward Matt Guelfi has suffered a setback in his 2023 preparations, hurting his calf at training on Friday.

The club announced that Guelfi will miss the next few weeks as he recovers, hindering his progression and puts round one availability in doubt.

Bomber GM of performance Daniel McPherson said the livewire was sent for scans as a "precaution".

"Matt suffered calf soreness following training and was sent for a precautionary MRI, which confirmed that he has a strain in his calf," McPherson said.

"He is an important part of our team, and we will take the time to ensure he is fully recovered ahead of the season."

Suns pair on track as Powell suffers setback

Saturday Feb 4

Gold Coast pair Ben King and Lachie Weller are making big inroads toward their return from long-term injuries as Will Powell suffers a setback.

Powell - who tore his ACL in 2022 - was on track for a round one comeback but a recent hamstring injury has put that in doubt.

Scans revealed that the tear and a rough timeline of six weeks, sidelining the 23-year-old and putting a dampen on his preseason, according to AFL.com.au.

However, the Suns will be excited by the fact that King and Weller are pushing their case for the season opener.

The club is holding back their key forward after an injury-riddled start to his career but is confident he'll make an impact on 2023.

King is expected to feature in the upcoming practice matches, as is Weller.

Small defender Connor Budarick is also on track from his ACL injury but his return date is in the middle of the season.

Secret surgery for smokin' Joe

Thursday Feb 2

Brisbane forward Joe Daniher has reportedly undergone a secret surgery during the offseason to help fix his shoulder.

Teammate Harris Andrews revealed the information on SEN, saying that Daniher went under the knife in preparation of the 2023 season.

“Joe had a shoulder surgery, I guess you could call it,” Andrews confirmed.

“He’s going well. I don’t know if he’s quite back into full training at the moment, but he’s certainly moving well.

“He’s out there the majority of the time, I think he’s just got a couple of last boxes to tick with the shoulder to get him back into full match sim and stuff.

“But we’re doing some forward 50 versus back 50 stuff, he’s been moving really well and really vocal out on the track, so we’re really excited for what he can do this year.”

Finlayson hit with ankle surgery

Thursday Feb 2

Port Adelaide utility Jeremy Finlayson has been battered pillar-to-post lately.

Following the heartbreaking cancer diagnosis of his partner, Kellie Gardner, reported by Fox SportsFinlayson has now been booked in for ankle surgery.

The former Giant was injured during a training drill, where his foot was "caught under a teammate as he was tackled and was unable to complete" the rest of the session.

However, Finlayson and the club are hopeful that he'll be right to go come round one against Brisbane on March 18.

Stringer setback at Tullamarine

Thursday Feb 2

Essendon's Jake Stringer has had a minor setback in his preparations for the 2023 season, with the midfield/forward hybrid dealing with back soreness.

Stringer was on light duties at the club on Thursday, training mostly indoors and was seen discussing with the medicos, according to the Herald Sun.

The Bombers said the 28-year-old was dealing with some soreness after dominating during the match simulation on Wednesday and are hopeful of increasing his workload come Saturday's session.

Ward working his way back to full fitness

Thursday Feb 2

Hawthorn youngster Josh Ward has been putting in the hard yards and looks to be at full fitness as we near the beginning of the 2023 season.

Ward - who's battled concussion, groin and hip issues in his opening seasons in the AFL - will be a welcome return to Sam Mitchell's side, who are in dire need of some talent.

The 19-year-old has recently overcome lingering leg issues and looks ready to explode at the elite level after spending countless hours on the bike, in the pool, running solo and boxing, according to AFL.com.au.

Ward was reported to have no issues after completing the main training session on Thursday.

Shuey believes team is 'fitter than the last four or five years'

Thursday Feb 2

West Coast captain Luke Shuey believes his team is in incredible nick heading into the 2023 season.

Following a disappointing campaign last year that resulted in just two wins, the Eagles look poised to mount some sort of comeback, taking inspiration from Sydney and Collingwood from previous seasons.

Both the Swans and Pies finished bottom four the year prior to making the finals and Shuey hasn't put a ceiling on what his club can achieve this year.

“A lot of people externally were calling us ‘unfit’ last year – and they probably weren’t completely off the mark with that suggestion," Shuey said on the club's website.

“But internally we were always going to figure out once we reviewed the season what we needed to get better at – and you can‘t do anything unless you’re fit in this game anymore. So our first step over the off-season was making sure we came back in good shape.

“Our strength and conditioning staff did a hell of a job putting together a program that was different to years gone by. The playing group was certainly more driven, more numbers training together every week.

“It was a really enjoyable off-season … It was hard work, but I think we‘re starting to reap some rewards.”

Daicos, De Goey fire in new-look midfield

Wednesday Feb 1

Nick Daicos and Jordan De Goey were reportedly firing through the midfield at training on Wednesday, with the pair likely to be allocated the bulk minutes through the centre.

Daicos - who will most likely be swapping with Scott Pendlebury through the half back - has put on some size in the offseason to slot into the midfield brigade.

De Goey on the other hand - who is returning from shoulder surgery pre-Christmas - is showing no signs of injury or struggle as he was back to his trademark skill of breaking tackles and hitting the opponents hard, reported by the Herald Sun.

The 26-year-old has been teasing for some time to become one of the game's elite midfielders and had a strong finish to the 2022 season that should hold him in good stead.

Collingwood's Cameron hobbles off the track at training

Wednesday Feb 1

Collingwood ruckman Darcy Cameron has hobbled off the training track on Wednesday, with reports suggesting he left with hamstring soreness.

Cameron - who will be sent for scans - is a pivotal player at the Pies given the departure of Brodie Grundy to Melbourne.

With six weeks to go to round one, the former Swan's availability is paramount to the club's success with Mason Cox the only known replacement as a big man.

The Herald Sun reported this injury, which can have plenty of repercussions at Collingwood that could put their 2023 start on the back foot from the get-go, whilst facing premiers Geelong on Friday, March 17.

Dunkley declares leaving "good midfielders" for "even better midfielders"

Wednesday Feb 1

New Brisbane recruit Josh Dunkley has settled into life as a Lion after crossing from the Western Bulldogs during the 2022 AFL Trade Period.

Dunkley - who'd been linked to a move to Essendon at the end of 2020 - finally got his wish of a fresh start and is keen to make his presence felt at his new club.

Although it's been tough adjusting to the new conditions and game styles, the midfielder believes the move has been good for him and his career.

“It’s tough on the track when its 35 degrees and humid from rain the night before, but I think early days it was hard to adjust, the balls slippery but now I feel like I’m used to it,” Dunkley said.

“The boys are training really well, everyone’s looking really fit and we’ve been running a lot, which is a different for me. It’s been great to change the stimulus of training and it’s been really refreshing for the mind and the body."

With already a few heated battles between the Dogs and Lions, the added spice of Dunkley's move will only make the round three clash even more enthralling.

The 2016 premiership player also made a slight dig at his former club, suggesting the midfield group at Brisbane is "even better".

“To come from a place that has really good midfielders, to come into the Club which has even better midfielders is amazing.

“You’ve got a Brownlow winner in Lachie, Hugh McCluggage and you look at how good he’s been in the last few years, plus blokes like Dev Robertson and Matho, we take each other honest at training and drive high standards.

“It’s a huge dynamic with a lot of faces going through the middle which is exciting.”

May excited by new recruits in 2023

Wednesday Feb 1

Melbourne defender Steven May is excited by the club's new recruits, with Brodie Grundy and Lachie Hunter impressing from the outset.

Grundy crossed from Collingwood as a part of a salary dump while Hunter left the Western Bulldogs in search of a fresh start.

The Demons will be hoping that the introduction of some new faces to the line-up will help replicate the 2021 season, where the club won the premiership.

May said that the former Pie has fitted in seamlessly and now provides another option in the ruck and up forward for coach Simon Goodwin to orchestrate.

"Obvious one is Brodie Grundy, he's like another midfielder," May glowingly said of his new teammate.

"He's so quick and clean below his knees. Probably didn't realise it that much playing against him but training with him and working with him, he's been awesome.

"Lachie Hunter's football IQ is exceptional and he's going to be a big asset for us on the other wing.

"He's got elite ball use and his fit, so it'll fit really well."

Carlton's Kennedy driving standards at training

Wednesday Feb 1

Carlton is currently on the Sunshine Coast for a pre-season camp and midfielder Matthew Kennedy is relishing every second of it.

The former Giant has taken it upon himself to drive himself (and teammates) to new heights, trying to squeeze everything they can out of the training sessions.

Kennedy admitted that while last year was about forming connections and developing cohesion between the staff and players, 2023 is about building on the foundation and rising well above it.

“Last year, being such a new group, there was such an emphasis on connection, which is a very good starting point for the group,” Kennedy said.

“We’ve done a lot of work on that and now it’s a bit more game plan as well and being able to raise the floor.

“We’re trying to be accountable with our standards at training, train well and train quite physically on the track but also being away together off the field – it’s just enjoyable being away in each other’s company.”

Wright appears right as Bombers breathe sigh of relief

Wednesday Feb 1

Reigning Essendon best-and-fairest winner Peter Wright looks set to return to training after he was cleared from a potential serious calf injury.

Wright - who is arguably the most important player at the Bombers - left the track early last Wednesday during match simulation, with the club fearing the worse.

However, scans have revealed that there wasn't any serious damage and the 26-year-old is expected to be back running.

Hollands keen to build on impressive start at the Suns

Wednesday Feb 1

Gold Coast's Elijah Hollands is keen to continue building on his impressive start to his career, working on becoming more consistent going forward.

Hollands debuted late in 2022 after battling multiple injuries including an ACL tear but is confident that the five games he has played will hold him in good stead for 2023 and beyond.

“My main goal is to be a consistent member of the AFL side,” Hollands said.

“I was able to crack in late last year which gave me the confidence that I have the ability to play at that level and play it well.

“This year, that’s the goal – to give myself the best shot at playing [23] games and finals.

“I played on the wing when I came in last year, which is where I’m doing a lot of training. Today there was a bit of time in the midfield and some forward time too,” he continued.

“I’ll give myself as many options as possible which is something I’m really keen to embrace.

Gold Coast land another SSP

Wednesday Feb 1

Gold Coast have officially signed another pre-season supplemental selection, with VFL Frankston player Brodie McLaughlin joining the club with the last spot on their list.

McLaughlin - who stands at 193cm tall - comes in along with Jed Anderson as an SSP recruit and will hope that he can make his presence felt after an impressive season in 2022.

At 25-years-old, the forward is looking to put his injury-plagued past behind him and have a real crack at AFL level.

“It’s been a lot of hard work to get here but I am just so excited to be officially joining the Suns and beginning my professional career,” McLaughlin said.

“I have absolutely loved training with the club over the pre-season so far and am determined to continue to work hard to help the team achieve success next season.”

Tex reveals standouts of Crows pre-season

Tuesday Jan 31

Adelaide veteran Taylor Walker has provided some insight into the club's pre-season, revealing some names who are impressing.

Walker spoke on Triple M said there were three players who were lighting up the track as the Crows close in on their pre-season hit outs before round one.

“We’ve just come off a four-day break, but the two weeks before that were probably our biggest weeks during pre-season,” Walker said.

“The ones who are training really well are Wayne Milera - he’s looking very, very healthy off half-back, Elliott Himmelberg, for Crows supporters is training the absolute house down, he’s been awesome.

“Also for Crows fans Max Michalanney, our number one draft pick, he’s been outstanding as well."

Michalanney was recently drafted to the club as a father-son selection and could join a smattering of young talent in Matthew Nicks' side come the opening weekend of the 2023 AFL season.

Important Pies trio on light duties on training

Tuesday Jan 31

Collingwood trio Darcy Moore, Jordan De Goey and Jeremy Howe were seen on light duties at training on Monday at the AIA Centre, as the club looks to building toward their round one clash against Geelong.

Moore - who has overcome a recent bone infection - completed a session away from the group where he did some running and agility drills, moving freely and increasing his workload after a few weeks off.

De Goey (shoulder) and Howe joined the blond-haired defender on the sidelines in the second half of the session, as the rest of their teammates participated in match simulation.

Finlay Macrae is also in the rehab group, according to the Herald Sun.

Hawks up-and-comer downed by hamstring injury

Tuesday Jan 31

Hawthorn's Harrison Morrison has been hit with the injury stick, as the winger has been downed by a hamstring injury that will sideline him for a month.

Morrison suffered the injury at training on Monday but is expected to be ready for round one.

The extent of the injury hasn't been revealed but the club is confident the 24-year-old will be right come March 19 against Essendon in the season opener.

St Kilda's misfortune continues as trainee injures hamstring

Tuesday Jan 31

St Kilda still has one more spot on their list, with former Essendon player Josh Eyre auditioning for the role since pre-Christmas.

However, AFL.com.au reported that Eyre has injured his hamstring at training, putting his pre-season supplemental selection in jeopardy ahead of the February 15 deadline.

The 20-year-old is to believed to be getting scans to assess the damage but is just another name that is added to the ever-growing injury list at the club.

Eyre now joins other key talls in Max King, Jack Hayes and Matthew Allison in the rehab group, as the Saints will now look to other avenues to goal for the early parts of the year.

Will the Rayner experiment pay off for the Lions?

Tuesday Jan 31

Brisbane have been experimenting with Cam Rayner across the half back, with the club looking at what the backline might look like after the departures of veterans Daniel Rich and Dayne Zorko.

Rayner - who has been working his way up into the midfield since being drafted with pick one in 2017 - has been trialled in this new position in intra club sessions.

Coach Chris Fagan is known for chucking players in new positions, attempting to offer new perspectives on the outlook of the game.

Rayner's potential move to the half back could help him become a more well-rounded player, developing the ability to read the ball and make judgement calls when the footy is over a kick away.

The likelihood the youngster will play in defence is minimal but the Lions - who lost a preliminary final to Geelong in 2022 - will be looking at new avenues and game styles to reach the decider.

Hunt bursting into best 22 at Eagles

Tuesday Jan 31

West Coast recruit Jayden Hunt is looking to lock down a position at his new club, especially after impressing in the club's match simulation across the half back.

Hunt - who crossed from Melbourne during the 2022 AFL Trade Period - has been keen to return to his explosive, game-breaking self at the Eagles.

The 27-year-old hasn't put a foot wrong since swapping out the red for the yellow, completing a full pre-season and is raring to go for round one.

In the match simulation, Hunt was reported to be burst away from opponents and breaking tackles, something the Eagles has missed over the past few seasons.

The former Dee lined up with recruit Reuben Ginbey and Elliot Yeo across the half back at times, with the pair splitting their time between the midfield and defence.

Freo speedster open to new role

Tuesday Jan 31

Fremantle speedster Michael Frederick has been reported to be pushed further up the wing in an attempt to give the club a different look for the upcoming 2023 season.

Frederick - who has predominantly played as a pressure forward - has been training on the wing to add more speed to Justin Longmuir's side and would help fill the void left by Blake Acres.

The 22-year-old declared he is open to play wherever suits the team and where he can contribute most.

"These days there are so many players who can play multiple positions out there and I guess that's one thing I'd like to do, whether it's now or later down the track," Frederick said.

"[I'm happy] to play up the ground or forward, whatever the coaches need. I haven't minded it too much at all.

"I'm playing forward still and every now and again I'll jump on the wing."

Smith back for Dogs as Treloar still has hurdles to jump

Monday Jan 30

Western Bulldogs midfielder Bailey Smith has joined the main group at training for the first time this year after tending to lower leg soreness since the completion of the 2022 season.

Smith - who is a pivotal part to the Dogs' line up - completed most of the training down at Rye after being carefully managed by the club.

The 22-year-old does look on track to play round one, which the same thing can't be said for teammate Adam Treloar.

The former Pie and Giant underwent ankle surgery in September and was limited by the injury in the back part of last year, writes AFL.com.au.

Treloar looks likely to miss the opening clash against Melbourne as the countdown is well and truly on for the upcoming season.

Fellow Dogs players Alex Keath, Caleb Daniel, Hayden Crozier, Tim O'Brien and Charlie Clarke were seen in the rehab group as they attempt to right their injuries.

Fantasia lingering injury a concern

Monday Jan 30

Port Adelaide Orazio Fantasia's lingering calf issue continues to rear its ugly head, as the small forward was withheld from the club's main drills on Monday.

Fantasia - who missed all of 2022 with injury - has been lighting up the track during the preseason but has been cautious with his approach to the upcoming season.

The former Bomber was seen running laps last week and was expected to increase his workload and has circled Wednesday (Feb 2) as the day.

Ruckman Lycett spoke on Fantasia and where he's at at the moment.

“He is going to be back training on Wednesday I think, he’s had a bit of a quiet week,” Lycett said, according to the Herald Sun.

“I think he did something little there but he should be back training on Wednesday.

“He is on a bit of a modified program because of the issues with his body over the last couple of years so coaches and physios have come together and made a program for him.

“He has been going really well, I think he has been one of our best trainers (this pre-season).”

Lycett ready to go in 2023 and welcomes selection pressure

Monday Jan 30

Port Adelaide ruckman Scott Lycett declared he is ready to go for the 2023 season after overcoming shoulder surgery last year.

The former Eagle said his ready to carry the load of the No.1 big man at the club, despite having plenty of competition for spots.

"Having competition for spots is only beneficial for the team," Lycett said.

"You look at the best teams and there's guys absolutely knocking the door down and they can't get a game so it's definitely good for the team.

"He (Teakle) is pushing me at training and young Haysey and Dante as well ... these guys are all pretty young and I am one of the older ones so they're definitely going to be trying to come for that spot.

"We will wait and see and leave it up to the coaches. The best trainers will get the spot."

Youngster Brynn Teakle and forward Jeremy Finlayson shouldered the load whilst Lycett was injured, with the later proving to be a unique option through the midfield.

New lions impress in match sim

Saturday Jan 28

New Brisbane players Josh Dunkley and Will Ashcroft have impressed on lookers at the club's match simulation on Friday.

The pair were on the same 'maroon' team in the midfield, alongside Hugh McCluggage and Oscar McInerney.

On the club's site, they said:

"Dunkley seamlessly adapted to the Brisbane playing style, with his 191cm frame hard to miss around the ground. The 26-year-old even snuck forward to kick two majors for his team.

Meanwhile, Ashcroft was everywhere in the first 15-minute stint, collecting plenty of ball and not at all overwhelmed by the strong pressure applied from his opposing teammates."

No.1 pick lighting up the track

Saturday Jan 28

GWS' pick one Aaron Cadman is reportedly lighting up the track on his way to a potential round one debut.

Cadman - who stands at 195cm - has been impressive so far at his new club and it hasn't gone unnoticed.

Assistant coach Brett Montgomery said that the young forward looks primed to play in round one and he should take those opportunities with both hands.

“I’d like to think so,” Montgomery said.

“He certainly hasn’t put a foot wrong so far. He's only a slight build, incredibly athletic, he gets across the ground really well, so I don’t see why not.

“Obviously we’ll have the dilemma with Harry Himmelberg who’s a pivotal piece for us and whether he plays forward or back, at the moment he’s spending his time at the forward just to make sure that we’ve got some insurance if Aaron isn’t ready to go early in the season.

“But we’re really excited, really hopeful that he’ll play some meaningful football early.”

Cadman's potential selection up forward could cause a headache given the talls the club has.

Harry Himmelberg, Jesse Hogan and Jake Riccardi are all expected to be in the best 23, with new coach Adam Kingsley having his work cut out for him.

Montgomery believes that if all four play, Himmelberg could be shifted to the backline.

"If we get Jesse Hogan up and running and fully fit and at the top of his game, and Jake Riccardi comes on like we believe he can, then that conversation will definitely need to be had,” he replied.

“I see Harry as one of these types that could potentially be an All-Australian centre half-back, and at the moment he’s running around the forward line playing roles for us because we need him, that’s where it sits.”

Key Hawks forward season derailed by injury

Saturday Jan 28

Hawthorn forward Mitchell Lewis will miss the opening months of the AFL season following a sprained ACL at training recently.

The club confirmed the injury, with head doctor Liam West believing Lewis won't need surgery.

"We will monitor Mitch's progress closely over the coming weeks," West said.

"He will certainly spend some time on the sidelines though and, at this stage, we expect him to miss Round 1.

"Whilst this is the same knee he injured last season, it is an unrelated injury."

Young Roo eyeing off round one debut

Saturday Jan 28

North Melbourne draftee Harry Sheezel is eyeing off a round one debut, with the club reporting he has been one of the top performers throughout the preseason.

Sheezel - who joined the club with pick three in the 2022 Draft - has enjoyed an uninterrupted preseason and would love to convert that to AFL games.

"I haven't really set specific goals about the practice matches, but at the moment the aim is to probably play as early as I can, and Round 1 would obviously be the first game," Sheezel told.

"So, yeah, I am looking towards that, and that would be a great opportunity if it is to happen."

Sheezel also reflected on the time he's spent at the club and how much he's enjoyed it so far.

"It's probably been a bit better than I expected," Sheezel said.

"I'm just loving the full-time environment that comes with being an AFL footballer.

"Training is ramping up into more match sim which I'm loving, and I'm learning more each day.

"The first match sim was a bit of a wake-up (call) playing against bigger bodies and the game is much faster, but we've done it for about two weeks now and it feels like with every game we play I'm feeling more comfortable and getting more used to the level."

The youngster also had a few names that were impressing him during the summer months, as the Kangaroos attempts to rebuild its list and reputation under new coach Alastair Clarkson.

"Souvvy's (Larkey) been really good … I'm speaking to him a lot about the structures, and he's someone I've been able to get a lot of information off," Sheezel said.

"Someone (else) I've been watching from a playing perspective has been Curtis Taylor and 'Stevo' (Jaidyn Stephenson), they're playing similar roles to me so I'm trying to watch them."

Freo's Young tipped for AA selection in 2023

Saturday Jan 28

Fremantle's Hayden Young is tipped to have a massive 2023 season, improving on his breakout year last campaign.

The rebounding defender is a pivotal cog in the Docker's backline and could help the club go a step further in the upcoming year.

Former Fremantle player Paul Hasleby went out on a limb and suggested the youngster will be an All-Australian, according to SEN.

“I’m going to make a big call, Hayden Young to be All-Australian for the first time for the Fremantle Dockers," Hasleby said.

“He’s one of those guys, I think they really like what he can provide from half-back, he’s got great vision and at the moment he’s having a really good pre-season so it will be interesting to see how he goes this year.”

Journalist Mitchell Woodcock also shared the same opinion as the Fremantle legend, likening Young to Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury.

“He’s just such a smooth mover, he just has that ‘no panic space’ sort of way of playing like a Pendlebury does, where he never looks panicked, he just hits targets,” Woodcock said.

“He looks really good, started at half-back, Jordan Clark on the other half-back flank and both of them really provide some pace.

“He just has smarts, the ability to switch the ball was really good from Young and I really think he’s in for a big year.

“Everyone looks at all these young talented players, and everyone thinks Hayden Young might have the biggest ceiling at times, I tell you what, when he kicks it off half-back you can see why.”

St Kilda handed another injury blow

Saturday Jan 28

St Kilda have been handed another injury blow on top of Max King and Jack Hayes, with youngster Matthew Alison hurting his foot.

The 20-year-old is set for surgery to repair the stress fracture in his left navicular bone and puts his round one selection on the back burner.

Performance manager David Mission said the news was 'very disappointing' and gave an insight into the duration of recovery time.

“Matt had really been impressing on the track, so for this to happen is very disappointing,” Misson said.

“Following consultations with specialists we elected to send Matt in for surgery to have the foot stabilised.

“While the recovery time is 16 – 20 weeks, which is significant, Matt’s a really positive and professional young man.

“He goes into this period of rehabilitation with the whole club behind him.”

Ridley notices standouts amid drastic changes for Bombers

Saturday Jan 28

Essendon's Jordan Ridley is reportedly raring to go ahead of the 2023 season, with some of his teammates joining in on the ride to round one.

Ridley spoke to the club's media team and says the introduction of the new coaching panel has breathed a new lease on life.

“It is looking really good; the boys are good, really fit and in good shape raring to go for the season.” Ridley said.

“I’m really enjoying it, new head coach, there a few changes in philosophies around the way we train. I am really enjoying having more coaches out at training."

The young defender also listed a few names who are helping set the standards during the preseason.

“There are quite a few standouts.” Ridley said.

“Brandon Zerk-Thatcher is building nicely on the confidence he gained from the backend of last year, I reckon he is looking to take his game to another level this year.”

“Jye Menzie as a forward is also looking really good, he has started to find his feet and I think he will have a good year.

“Both (Sam Weideman and Will Settefield) fit in seamlessly; they have both played a bit of footy themselves at AFL level.”

“They’re looking good and will add something different to our team.”

Fremantle recruit poised for big year

Saturday Jan 28

Fremantle recruit Josh Corbett is suiting up for a big year, especially since the departure of talls Rory Lobb and Griffin Logue from the side.

Corbett - who crossed over from Gold Coast during the trade period - has struggled to cement his spot in the AFL, but a new lease on life at the Dockers could be exactly what he needs.

Forward coach Jaymie Graham noticed the former Sun's potential and what he can offer the club.

“He is an in-between type size, but he works hard and we have seen him take a couple of good marks in match simulation,” Graham said.

“Josh can add to us from an on-field point of view, but off-field he is a quality character and has definitely added to us in that area from a culture point of view as well.

“He has fit in at the Club really well.

Graham also noted how the forward line could look, with Matt Taberner, Josh Treacy and the ruckmen (Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson) all playing up there at times.

“Corbett and Josh Treacy have looked good up forward and young Jye Amiss who we saw play some footy towards the backend of last year is showing some good signs - as well as Matt Taberner,” Graham said.

“It’s going to be interesting, we have also had our rucks (Sean Darcy and Luke Jackson) rotating through the forwards.

“It’s still a fair way off deciding what it looks like and that can change on any given week once we get going, but it’s all coming together.”

AFL reveal pre-season match ups ahead of 2023 season

Wednesday Jan 24

The AFL has recently revealed some official pre-season matches ahead of the upcoming 2023 season.

AFL.com.au journalist Josh Gabelich was quick to announce some of the clashes scheduled for February and March.

"Expected to be locked in next week. Geelong v Hawthorn, St Kilda v Melbourne, NM v Richmond, Essendon v Gold Coast, Sydney v Bris," Gabelich tweeted.

This comes as journalist Ryan Daniels also revealed that the Western and South Australian teams are planning on playing practice matches also.

Potential pre-season match-ups for WA, SA teams

Tuesday Jan 24

With the AFL season increased by one week, due to the Gather Round, the league felt it would benefit from reducing the preseason schedule and start the competition earlier.

Usually two organised pre-season matches prior to the beginning of the season, now there may only be one.

Journalist Ryan Daniels believes that for the Western and South Australian teams, a clash on February 24 could occur.

Moore on the mend as star eyes of round one, captaincy

Tuesday Jan 24

Collingwood's Darcy Moore is well and truly on the mend, with the key defender's preseason interrupted by a bone infection before the Christmas break.

Moore has since been taking it easy but joined the group in the last week in a bid to ramp up his preparations before round one.

The All-Australian is confident about his availability for the start of the season and believes the infection is in the rear view mirror.

"I am (confident about round one availability). I'm feeling really good so far. It's still early days, and more than anything, just happy to be moving again and back around the boys," Moore said.

"It's obviously been a bit interrupted. I've had a pretty smooth return the last couple of weeks since we've been back. I'm just happy to be back running, moving and kicking the footy again.

"It's an exciting time for me after a rough couple of months. I'm building really well. The physios and medical team and conditioning team are taking really good care for me. I've got a really good plan in place to get back."

However, when pressed about the vacant captaincy at the club, Moore played it cool and noted that there is a process that will be followed to decide who is right to lead the club.

"It is obviously something that's been spoken about and we're as excited as anyone about what the future holds for the leadership of the team," he said.

"This is obviously a pretty special team; we achieved some great things last year and showed a lot of character. That shows that the group is really healthy, whoever leads from the front.

"I think there definitely is a group of us that have the experience and traits that are definitely capable of doing it. It's not something I've given a lot of thought to. Dad was obviously a past captain of the club."

Mitchell gives insight to next Hawthorn captain

Tuesday Jan 24

Hawthorn's captaincy appointment was a topic of conversation at coach Sam Mitchell's press conference, after the departure of Ben McEvoy from the club.

Mitchell - who didn't give too much away - admitted there were many candidates that would suit the role well, with the Hawks nearing their decision.

“Externally, James Sicily is the obvious one, but certainly there are a lot of players that I wouldn’t underestimate their influence on our group,” Mitchell said.

“I don’t think we’ll have a leadership vote, it won’t be as plainly as that – it will be a discussion.

“What do we stand for? What do we want to achieve? Who’s the best people to take us there?

“You don’t need to be a master of everything to be a captain of a footy club, you need to be strong in a couple of areas and know how to get other people to help you in others.”

Fremantle forward impresses on track

Tuesday Jan 24

Fremantle small forward Sam Switkowski has impressed on the training track recently, with the club saying he has shown 'spark' in the forward half.

The Dockers noted that Switkowski was the one to watch during the club's match simulation, providing plenty of pressure and looking dangerous around goal.

In the past, the 26-year-old has struggled to stay on the park as injuries have hindered his consistency at the level.

However, Switkowski is keen on reversing that trend in 2023 and is excited by what he and the team can bring to the upcoming season.

“I’d love to just play a full season, it’s been a long time since I have,” Switkowski said.

“That’s probably number one, and how I make that happen is a variety of factors - consistency in my training and hoping for a bit of luck as well.

“At the same time, I need to keep improving my game, there’s a lot of competition for spots so you can’t get complacent. If you were in the 22 last year, it doesn’t mean it will happen again, so I have to keep improving and practicing my craft.

“I’m building and gaining more confidence with my footy and I’m loving building the chemistry with the guys and the finals experience last year.

“Things are tracking upwards and I’m really excited for what we can produce this year.”

Duursma doing damage in preseason

Tuesday Jan 24

Port Adelaide's Xavier Duursma has revealed that he is feeling as fit as ever and is ready to make an impact in 2023.

Duursma has suffered from multiple injuries and form setbacks which has hindered his ability to add consistency to his game, but is keen to make any amends for the time lost thus far.

“Definitely aerially, I wasn’t confident at all with my knee, with my shoulder… I wasn’t confident to be able to jump, if I'm being honest. Fitness as well, I was nowhere near as fit as I am now. I’m feeling really good about (my game) now," Duursma said.

“It's been a challenging couple of years and I’ve learned a lot about myself but I think at the same time, I think this is building towards a really good year (for me). That’s what I’m hoping for and working toward on the track.”

Duursma also opened up about his work with the club psychologist and how that's helped him build his confidence.

“(I worked on) a fair bit of this by myself, but there were also times where I did work with Dave our mindset coach and Amanda, who is our club psychologist.

“(I did) a little bit of looking at old vision and I had some good chats with my dad in the off-season. He’s a pretty wise footy mind, he definitely knows what he’s talking about, so I like to listen to him.”

Lions snap up former Saint

Tuesday Jan 24

Brisbane has recently signed former St Kilda defender, Darragh Joyce as a pre-season supplemental selection.

Joyce - who was at the Saints for six years - was recently delisted by the club but now gets his second chance in the AFL at the Lions.

Key defender Marcus Adams was recently put on the inactive list due to ongoing concussion issues, opening a spot up at the club.

The Lions have recognised a need to bolster their defence and the inclusion of Joyce will assist that.

“We’re really pleased to have Darragh on board to help bolster our defence,” Brisbane GM Danny Daly said.

“We’ve been watching his journey over the past few years, and we feel confident he can play a role in our team.

“We see Darragh as a great fit for our Club given his toughness around the contest, and he comes to us with some valuable experience from having been in the AFL system over the past six years.”

Hunter's role at Demons "critical"

Sunday Jan 22

New Melbourne recruit Lachie Hunter has been labelled as "critical" on the wing as he suits up with his new club.

Hunter made the switch from the Western Bulldogs in the 2022 Trade Period and is expected to relish in the fresh start.

Journalist Josh Gabelich believes that the Bulldogs best-and-fairest winner can be pivotal to the Demons 2023 premiership chances, teaming up with elite winger Ed Langdon.

“He’s had some on-field and off-field issues so if he can get himself right, I think he can come in and play a pretty critical role for them," Gabelich said, according to SEN.

“They’ve already got one of the best wingmen in the comp in Ed Langdon, so if Lachie Hunter can get back to his best, they’re going to have an awesome wing combination,” Gabelich said.

“(Melbourne) obviously identified a spot on the wing that they needed to address, that’s why they were so into Karl Amon heading into the trade period, they missed out on him to Hawthorn obviously.”
